This, along with easier mailbox administration, leads to lower total license fees, fewer servers to buy, and lower maintenance costs across the board. This means administrators can safely place far more users spanned across multiple databases on a single server. Hence if a database becomes corrupted, the impact can be isolated, resulting in faster recovery times. And Exchange 2003, like Exchange 2000, uses multiple databases to store user mailboxes (akin to not putting all of your eggs in one basket). A Microsoft Exchange 2003 server can handle far more user mailboxes than can an Exchange 5.5 server.

The capability is built right into Exchange 2003.īut the major cost benefit for Exchange shops comes from server consolidation. Another potential cost saver: No longer do companies need to deploy a separate server (formerly known as Mobile Information Server 2002) to support mobile devices. Also, the Exchange 2003 device CAL will lower costs significantly for companies with multiple users accessing an Exchange server from a single workstation. This was not strictly the case with Exchange 2000. The Exchange 2003 user CAL now gives a user the right to use any client to access Exchange.

Buyers should also be pleased with Microsoft's more flexible licensing structure.
